It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and burnt out in our fast-paced world, isn’t it? This summer, I challenge you to take a staycation that focuses on YOU. After all, taking a break doesn’t require a plane ticket or a week off of work. Sometimes, all you need to rejuvenate is to stay home and focus on self-care. Here are 10 staycation ideas to help you recharge your mind, body, and spirit from the comfort of home.
1. Create a Spa Day at Home
This is one of me and my daughters’ favorite things to do when we are feeling overwhelmed. Transform your bathroom (or any room) into a luxurious spa at home. Set the scene with relaxing music, candles, dim lights and indulge in a long bath with essential oils or bath salts. Afterward, follow up with a face, hair, or foot mask. Maybe even all 3! Don’t forget to hydrate with your favorite infused water or relaxing herbal tea. Make a day or night of it!
2. Digital Detox Day
Unplug for a day. Turn off your phone, ban social media, and refrain from binge watching your favorite series. Take this time to disconnect from the electronic world and reconnect with yourself. Read a book, journal, meditate, or simply enjoy the silence. If you can, get out into nature for as many of these as you can. The fresh air paired with no electronics is a powerful combination. This break from screens can help you feel more in the moment and significantly reduce stress.
3. Yoga and Meditation Retreat
Set aside a day dedicated to yoga and meditation. You can do this on your own or find a local class or retreat to attend. There are plenty of offerings online and tutorials for all levels. You don’t need to be an expert. Start your day with a gentle yoga session and follow it up with a guided meditation. Take breaks throughout the day to breathe deeply, move and stretch, and practice gratitude. End the day with a restorative yoga practice to get you ready for a great night’s sleep.
4. Culinary Adventure
You know those recipes you keep saving and then never make? Pick a few of those and make a day of cooking meals that nourish your body and soul. Invite a friend to join you to make it even more fun. Take your time and enjoy the process. You could also bake a batch of your favorite treats to indulge a little. You don’t have to eat perfectly every day to stay on track with your health goals. Small indulgences keep you satisfied and on course.
5. Nature Immersion
Spend a day outdoors. Whether that be in your backyard, on your front porch, or wherever you see fit, immerse yourself in nature. Create a cozy outdoor space at home with comfortable seating, blankets, and pillows. Then, listen to the sounds of nature, read a book on a swing, or practice some outdoor yoga. If you garden, spend time tending it or potting new plants. The fresh air and connection to nature can do wonders for your overall well-being.
6. Creative Pursuits
Spend a day engaging in a creative activity that you love or have always wanted to try. For example, I love to dance and do crafts with my daughter. Some other examples could be painting, drawing, writing, knitting, or playing a musical instrument. The idea is to practice something that brings you joy and also allows you to express yourself creatively. Creativity is a great mood booster and stress reliever. Give it a try and see for yourself!
7. Movie Marathon or Book Binge
Sometimes, all you need is a good escape. Plan a movie marathon with your favorites or plan to watch a series you’ve been dying to find the time to binge. If movies/series aren’t your thing, choose a book to read instead and spend the day immersed in reading. Set the scene with cozy blankets and your favorite snacks. Then get lost in the storyline.
8. Declutter and Organize
To some this might not sound relaxing but hear me out. Decluttering your space can have a profound therapeutic effect on your mental state. Make it fun by blasting your favorite music or listening to your favorite podcast or audible book. Choose one area of your home to focus on. It could be your closet, an entire room that needs attention, or your workspace. The act of tidying up can give you a real sense of accomplishment and create a more peaceful environment in your home. Trust me, it’s definitely worth the time and effort.
9. Pamper Yourself with a DIY Beauty Routine
Dedicate a day to pampering yourself. You could give yourself a mani/pedi, a facial, or simply apply a luxurious body lotion after your shower. Whatever makes you feel pampered. You could also try your hand at making some homemade beauty treatments using natural ingredients, so you have a product to use in the future that makes you feel good.
10. Plan Your Future Adventures
Spend some time planning future adventures. I like creating vision or Pinterest boards with places to visit, things to do, and goals to achieve. This can be a fun, rewarding, and inspiring activity that helps you stay positive and motivated. Invite friends over to do it with you.
