Celebrating Mom: A Tribute and Self-Care Guide for Mother’s Day

It’s that time of year to celebrate the most incredible women who shape our lives in endless ways—our moms. From late-night cuddles to wise words of wisdom, moms are the cornerstones of our lives. Therefore, this Mother’s Day let’s shower the moms in our life with love and appreciation but also encourage them to prioritize their own self-care. Here’s my heartfelt tribute to mothers everywhere, along with some ideas on how we can better care for them and help to normalize regular self-care routines.

Express Heartfelt Gratitude:

Take a moment to express your gratitude for the sacrifices and love your mom has given you through the years. As a mom of 3, I fully understand what it takes to raise a child and it’s not for the faint of heart! Furthermore, we don’t tell our moms enough how much they matter so take some time this Mother’s Day to write a heartfelt letter, prepare a homemade meal, or simply call her to let her know just how much she means to you. I can assure you it will be the highlight of her day.

Encourage Rest and Relaxation:

It’s no secret that moms often put their own needs last. However, it’s essential for us moms to prioritize rest and relaxation in order to take the best care of ourselves AND the people we cherish. Remind yourself to take breaks throughout the day, indulge in a favorite hobby, or simply unwind with a good book, movie or bath. Help yourself to see the value in self-care and fall in love with your old hobbies again! Trust me, you will be a whole new person and much better equipped to handle whatever comes your way.

Promote Healthy Habits:

Prioritize your physical health by engaging in regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and plenty of hydration. Even small changes like taking a daily walk as a family or cooking a healthy meal together can make a big difference. I know I love having chats with my kiddos and/or my mom on a walk or in the kitchen when we are preparing a meal together.

Create Boundaries:

In our busy lifestyles, moms are often pulled in many directions at once. As a mom it’s crucial to set boundaries and prioritize your personal needs. It’s much more difficult to function optimally on an empty cup. We do it but in the long run it wears us down. Encourage yourself and the moms in your life to say NO to activities or commitments that drain your energy and yes to activities that bring you joy. The more you do that lifts your spirit, the better you and the other moms in your life will function. Let’s help each other out here!

Support Mental Health:

Motherhood can be emotionally draining, so it’s important for moms to put their mental health as a high priority. Take the time you need to nurture your mental health and seek help when you are having a bad day. Remind the moms in your life to rely on the support of friends, family, or even a therapist if needed. Normalize taking the necessary time to nurture mental health.

Plan Self-Care Activities:

Plan regular self-care activities that bring you joy, peace, and relaxation. Whether it’s a day at the spa with the girls, a walk in your favorite nature spot, or simply taking the time to meditate, remind yourself to prioritize activities that recharge your batteries. Better yet, plan to do these regularly with your own mom or other mom friends. It’s always easier to stick to any routine with the buddy system. Then you both win!

Lead By Example:

Finally, lead by example. By making your own self-care a high priority you normalize the habit for others too. If we each take it upon ourselves to get better at this and encourage our moms and mom friends to do the same we will create a greater support system. This makes us much more likely to stick with a routine. Show the moms in your life that self-care isn’t selfish. In fact, it’s necessary to live your best, most vibrant life.

This Mother’s Day, let’s celebrate the amazing moms in our lives and normalize the importance of regular self-care routines. Remember, a happy and healthy mom is better able to care for those she loves. So, to all the moms out there, thank you for everything you do. I see YOU and YOU deserve all the love and care in the world.
